The following is an excerpt from US Patent Number 6,287,690 "Modacrylic fiber is a stable fiber which chars and expands when exposed to open flame, while melamine fiber is a high temperature resistant, unstable brittle fiber. The modacrylic fiber acts as a carrying agent for the melamine fiber which, when blended, creates a stable/flexible high temperature resistant material. Suitable modacrylics are sold under the tradenames Protex ¹ -M or Protex-S, while melamine fiber is commercially available from BASF ² under the tradename Basofil ³." ¹ Protex is a tradename of Kaneka Corporation, Osaka, Japan. ² June, 2002: BASF sells Basofil fiber business to McKinnon-Land-Moran, LLC ³ Alessandra is Basofil's tradename for their flame barrier corespun yarn, consisting of glass core and Protex and Basofil fibers. |
